Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s Theory on Burnout

Marissa Mayer has (re)built great success in just the first year she’s been with Yahoo!. Her  leadership style and bold choices in acquisitions have strongly influenced the culture and function of the entire company.

Her theory on burnout is essential for HR leaders to know and stay aware of, not only for the employees sake, but also for their own.

“I think what burnout is really about is, it’s about resentment. It’s about ‘Wow! I worked this hard at my job, and I couldn’t even do X’.” She proposes that everyone at work has their own rhythm – whether it’s travel, or dinner at home; and that burnout comes from damaging ones’ rhythm. Check out the piece that Makers put together of Marissa talking about finding your rhythm.

Your rhythm can lower your stress level and bring inspiration from the world to your every day work, like it does for Marissa. Protecting an employee’s rhythm can lower the likeliness of anyone being burnt out and help them stay productive and happy during working hours.

My rhythm is making sure I get every Sunday afternoon  to myself – nothing else. Monday morning is so much more pleasant when I’m fully rested.

What’s your rhythm?
